Chosen Charities

Proud to support local charities

Philip Dennis Foodservice has named North Devon Hospice as their Charity of the Year for its South West Depots. Having supported the hospice in many ways for a number of years, such as sponsoring the charity’s annual Big Breakfast event, it was the first-hand experience of a member of staff that made the company commit to a year-long campaign of fundraising.

“Without the hospice, we’d have been lost,” said Phil Dunn, who is Butchery Manager at the Roundswell depot of Philip Dennis Foodservice. “When the company asked for suggestions for our Charity of the Year, I shared my story because North Devon Hospice had an incredible impact on my family.”

Phil’s little brother, Ryan Dunn, was just 30 years old when he was diagnosed with cancer of the bile duct. “It took over very quickly, and there was nothing that could be done. Before we knew it, we needed the care and support of North Devon Hospice,” said Phil. “Ryan was cared for on the Bedded Unit and I’ll never forget my first time walking into the hospice, thinking how warm and welcoming it was. It didn’t’ feel like a hospital or anything like that, it felt like home for us all.”

Ali Hunt, Head of Fundraising at North Devon Hospice, said: “Phil’s heart-breaking story goes to show that the hospice touches the lives of so many local families. Sadly, the number of younger people we care for would surprise most people. But the support we provide to the whole family, for as long as it is needed, means no one should face such a situation alone. We can only provide this care thanks to the support of local people, so we are incredibly grateful to Philip Dennis Food Service for choosing North Devon Hospice as their Charity of the Year. We can’t wait to work together and make this a really successful partnership.”
